i rearranged some furniture just before christmas, freeing up space in the middle bedroom for the loveseat.  that meant bringing the dresser down to the living room (by myself! somehow) in place of that bookcase in the left corner.

so now this dresser is by the front door... (minus the christmas stuff)

and i gave the bookcase a little makeover.

first up, a fresh coat of white paint and some super time-consuming painter's tape.  i also removed the shelf and plan to repurpose the baskets.

seriously, it took me a long time to figure out how to make the greek key pattern. probably too long.  geometry was my worst class of all time.  (until graduate level international finance. the words 'exchange rate' are banned in our house.)

anyway!  i also painted some ikea wine racks white and hung glasses (holders are also from ikea).  see, our wine used to stay in the basement closet but who wants to walk all the way downstairs to fetch a bottle? now i've got it all right here!

our sad liquor collection is exactly two bottles of rum.  we don't even really drink rum.  or liquor (save for sean and vodka).  it's mostly beer and wine in the smona house.

i used the martha stewart vintage gold paint, it doesn't photograph so well.

i'm also trying out a little chair swap.

while it's no bar cart, which i still desperately want, it's pretty cute for a repurposed bookshelf.  and i sort of want to email a photo to my 8th grade geometry teacher.

did you guys think i was done with the gold paint?  no way.

  2. It looks fab! I'm so impressed with your patience with the tape. I get so frustrated and then just give up!

Your carpet is very pretty, btw.

    Happy New Year!

  3. your paint skills amaze me. i had no patience for doing anything that requires taping...though this looks so great, i might have to reconsider.

  4. So cool! I love the use of the bookshelf. Am I the only one SO impressed by how perfectly the three wine racks fit into the shelf?

  5. thanks guys!

mary - there was hammering involved. i even had a half inch extra (supposedly) but i'm guessing the racks aren't perfectly square so it was a tight squeeze! i don't think i'll ever get them out again.

  7. Our liquor collection mainly consists of sherry, every type of port, Madeira and sweet and dry vermouth. All for cooking...we're a beer and wine household too.

I can't even begin to figure out how you got the tape on the bookcase to create that design. It turned out great!

  9. OMG, so many things to say. I LOVE your answer to a bar cart. I, too longed for a bar cart:

but was also forced to make it work with stuff I already had, so I extra admire your effort! I also am in awe of your painting skills - that gorgeous gold detailing is amazing!!

    XOXOXO

  10. I know it's no bar cart, but have you considered putting the bookcase on casters? At least then it would be a bit portable! Also, I love love your paint job -- and that dresser is amazing! Currently scouring your archives for mention of it.
